The Nau Center is hosting a moderated discussion on "Conservatives and the Challenge of Compromise in the Civil War Era" in UVA's Special Collections Library. Professor Elizabeth Varon will moderate the discussion, which will include three recent UVA PhDs who published books in the previous year.
Jack Furniss (UVA PhD 2018) will discuss his book, Between Extremes: Seeking the Political Center in the Civil War North. Jesse George-Nichol (UVA PhD 2023) will discuss her book, Conservative Americanism: Nativism, Unionism, and Slavery in Border South Politics, 1854-1861. And Ian Iverson (UVA PhD 2022) will discuss his book, Holding the Political Center in Illinois: Conservatism and Union on the Brink of the Civil War.
